Wine Director and Sommelier Christian Galliani is a wine writer, consultant, former wine retailer and a graduate of the Sommelier Society of America.
A native New Yorker born to Italian and Argentine immigrants, he was raised with a reverence for his ancestral lands, and all things food and wine related. He was taught from an early age that food and wine are the measuring sticks of any civilization.
“I fell into wine by accident. My career as a NYC real estate broker stalled during the recession and an attack of appendicitis while uninsured led me to take a night job at a wine shop. I was always interested in the world of wine, but I had no idea until then that it was a perfect fit for my natural talents.
I quickly saw that development of a rapport with the customers and their tastes was important, so knowing the wine was critical. I adopted a philosophy that wine is an inherently populist beverage. From Roman slaves to the Caesars, from Kings and Queens to farmers, it was consumed all throughout history by rich and poor alike.
Nowadays beautifully made wines can be found in nearly every corner of the world.
There is no right or wrong as it comes to one’s tastes. It’s important to remember that for all its virtues, wine is basically there to give us pleasure. It has been used for refreshment, celebration, sacrament, and as a central prop in folklore, but its very highest and most noble purpose is to elevate the food on your table.”
Christian has thus curated the wines on Orama’s new lists with this central idea in mind. Each wine is selected for its character, value and as a supporting player on Chef John Pilouras’ culinary stage.
Whether a guest might prefer delicate white Burgundy, refreshing rose, a bombastic, full-bodied California red, an intriguingly nuanced Aglianico, or a trophy Bordeaux, Christian has ensured we have the perfect offering that will take your meal to new heights.
Christian’s greatest professional satisfaction comes from forming connections with guests and recommending something they love.
“I’m not just here to sell wine. I’m here as a guide and helpful presence. My goal is to make choosing the perfect wine easier and more enjoyable for our guests. I intend to exceed their expectations. There’s nothing more satisfying for me than getting to know our guests, and their preferences. “
In his spare time Christian writes articles for different wine related publications, hosts private events, classes, and leads immersive wine tours through Italy, where he discovers new and interesting wines to add to Orama’s wine lists.
